“TEFL” is the acronym for Teaching English as a Foreign Language, in effect English language instruction for non-native speakers. It is also known as Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), English Language Teaching (ELT), and teaching ESL (English as a Second Language).
TEFL/TESOL is one of the fastest-growing educational sectors worldwide, offering excellent opportunities for teaching English abroad to both native and fluent English speakers who earn their TEFL/TESOL certification.
TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) and TESOL are terms that are often used for the same purpose. TESOL usually applies to teaching English language learners who are residing in English-speaking countries – but not always. When applying for jobs employers will consider your qualification the same, whether TESOL or TEFL.
Absolutely! Although the mode of lesson delivery may be computer-mediated, the basic (and not so basic) principles of teaching practice still apply. There is no mention of the mode of delivery on the course certificate.
As mentioned elsewhere, this course is an OFQUAL Level 5 qualification, and includes 130 hours of input from qualified teacher trainers comprising, 6 hours of teaching practice and feedback, preparation workshops, lectures and tutorials. You will receive personalised and focused support throughout the course to help you develop the teaching competencies required in the classroom.
This level of input and support along with the internationally recognised certificate is what sets the Trinity CertTESOL apart from taster courses, two-day intensives and other short-term or self-study courses.
All CertTESOL trainees should be over 18 years of age and have qualifications that would gain them entrance to University (or actual University qualifications). Please note that a university degree is not a pre-requisite to entry on to the course though some employers may expect prospective employees to have one. Your suitability for the course will be assessed through application and interview tasks.
The Trinity CertTESOL is hard work! You should be prepared to dedicate at least 15 hours a week to your studies. But like all things that are worth doing, all your hard work will pay off in the long-term. Remember, this is an OFQUAL level 5 course – the equivalent to the second year of a university degree which explains why the Trinity CertTESOL is held in such high regard by employers around the world!
It could take between 80 to 120 hours depending on how intensively you study. This is a self-study course that can be accessed at any time of day from anywhere with internet access.
This course is designed to give you valuable insight into the world of English language teaching and can lead to opportunities abroad. If you want to travel the world and earn some money as you go then this course will help you achieve your goal.
The only real limitation to any introductory TEFL course is the type of employer you will be eligible to work for; work at universities and many of the larger schools will almost certainly require a Trinity Cert TESOL, however if you’re thinking about TEFL as a career, you should seriously consider working towards a level 5 Trinity cert TESOL qualification.
